Money Advice for Creatives

Written for writers but it reads the same if you’re a photographer.

Money quote:

“If you don’t mind your own business then others will do it for you — and make no mistake that you will lose out, not because the people you are working with are evil or shifty, but simply because they are approaching their end like it is a business and will naturally take anything you leave on the table. That’s business. That’s how business works.”

Rob,

What do you think of his comments regarding not living in NY? I remember a post where you were basically dismissive of anyone who doesn’t live in NY or LA?

All the best (from the wilds of Maine)

PS I didn’t mean that to sound obnoxious or confrontational. Just interested in your thoughts about that.

Two things I found interesting in this article were, 1. take any work that pays, and 2. that while he says don’t live in NY/LA, etc., he did live in D.C. and brought his clients/connections with him.

The first point is basically saying, be a generalist, and the second point makes me wonder whether he’d be as successful if he started out in po-dunk Ohio, and tried to get work from the big cities.

Very interesting article though, and it shows that any creative and self employed person needs to treat what they do as a business.
