[...] Lat week’s tweetchat (#photoartchat) was a lot of fun. Most of the conversation centered print-on-demand book projects. This week, we’re going to continue talking about photobooks, but move onto other aspects. Harlan Erskine has lined up a special guest, Darius Himes, one of the founders of Radius Books. If you’re not familiar with Darius, here’s an interview over at A Photo Editor. [...]

Rob, thanks for publishing the nice interview with Himes and his insight on the small book publishing world, as well as the likes of Blurb, is great. I appreciate this article enough, that I am linking it to my on-line journal, The Photo Book.

Best regards, Doug

thanks, rob. i wasn't aware of radius books. always good to know that small publishers are doing this kind of thing. there are the big boys in photo books (chronicle, powerhouse, aperture, etc) and then there always seem to be a handful of other smaller publishers that quietly go about producing wonderful things.

i just spent over four years getting a book published (not counting the time spent shooting/editing/writing it) and it was an interesting, educational and rocky road to publication, certainly. i got some really pleasant rejection letters from big publishers, was all set to publish with st. ann's press a few years back and just before we were getting design finalized they went out of business. it became a little disheartening to see smaller presses go under, which certainly didn't leave photographers like me with many options.

blurb is great (though the shadow detail could use some improvement) but i think people really still like real well produced photo books. i'm a big believer in the idea of pictures in context, which is probably why i find magazine photography so rewarding. to be able to extend this sometimes to a full book is really quite something. i suggest everyone do it, at least once.

"Through the contest, we’re hopeful that the cream of the crop will rise to the top. We know there are photographers out there who think in terms of book-length projects and who simply haven’t had a chance to get that work in front of people in the photography industry. This is their chance."

that's cockamamie.

First sentence should have read like this instead...
"Through the contest, we're hopeful that the silver spoon trustafarians will rise to the top.

$35 entry fee, submission of 3 physical books that are in my case $75/piece to create, $23 shipping to me, and probably $20 shipping to them.

that is $303.

but here is the fine print that really killed it for me...I might have done it if I could have had them returned, so I could have given them to friends or family for xmas, but...

"All Submissions become the sole property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned."

and one last quote...
“I don’t have pet peeves, I have major, psychotic hatreds.”

About the Blurb Photography Book Now competition, I'd suggest reading the fine print... "allowing Sponsor to use royalty-free, the Submission worldwide in all media in perpetuity."

A concerned photographer...
