V magazine's cover is an ad pretty much every issue.
The Versace Issue.
The Fendi Issue.
The Burberry Issue.

But this Esquire cover is just FUGLY.

i think they get more out of the conversation this provokes than the money they got from the ad. they've always pushed the boundaries, which is why they are who they are. nevertheless, i find two lamentable things about this. one, it's a sorry comment on the state of the industry, and two, that they decided to compromise their integrity this way.

i agree with the first comment. except maybe they could have had their cake and eat it too. they could have had a cover full of blatent over-the-top advertisement, 'esquire, brought to you by coca cola' etc, as a way to sell a feature about the sad state of the print industry. satire is more up their alley. and the best part of it is, they probably could have got some money out of coke to boot.

i think that it's just fine. i almost think they should've been doing forms of this a while ago.

if it helps them get some sort of revenue, awesome. if not, then it's a failed effort.

San Francisco Chronicle's 144th Anniversary issue with the biggest front page ad I've ever seen.

PDN sold the whole cover a few issues back...kinda put a bad taste in my mouth...these days mags are mere vehicles for advertisement...no real substance anymore...thats what the web is for.
