Photography Might Be More Essential Than We Realize

“As our visual education and proficiency continues to increase over time, it will be important for newspapers and magazines to captivate us and draw us in by using photographs in even more powerful and creative ways, let’s hope they are up to the challenge.”

Yes…

And perhaps our visual senses are becoming like a spoiled child of sorts; the volume of “gifts” has become a flood so each one gets cast aside and into the mud, the demand for something “new” keeps on growing but the gratification potential keeps on eroding and no matter what photograph comes our way… we are affected a bit less and less.

@ Doug,

Yes, I was thinking the same thing this morning about a story that I saw in The Times. I have no idea how much time and money that Jamey Stillings invested in this personal project, but when i saw it, I thought, “Wow, he spent this much time on this thing, and people just quickly click thru ten or twelve images in the Times website Slide Show, and then they go on with their lives. That fast”. Gobble it up, and move on.

Here is the article:

If you want to look at the power of photography you just have to visit the images that come in from Tehran these days. I find very unique the way photos can condense and show a moment – for example where screaming veiled women clash with armed policemen, demonstrators, armed civilian police and people who try to calm emotions. I don’t think I would get this distilled view of what happens just from a video (which are also important for getting a complete picture)

They photos can be best seen at the Big Picture, which I think was talked about here before:

@Werner,
Here are many more photographs on this Flickr stream. Some look to be the same one’s used on the Big Picture article.

Let’s hope they are also up to paying a living wage to the photographers that create those pictures by paying a decent fee for reproduction.

Don’t hold your breath.
