  2. A new magazine that I shoot for has NO advertisers. It’s based purely on sales, which at around 330 000 a week is reasonable. They have no advertisers to suck up to, so all editorial is unbiased and they give the readers what they want.

    Bring it back to content rather than advertising.

  4. I don’t remember who said it, but content is King. People will pay for content, if they really want it they will pay. Hey I want access to the internet, I pay for it. I still pay subscriptions to a couple mags, one I payed a little extra for dual access. I wish that publishers would decide what they are going to do and do it.

    I had a lot to say but you know what, publishers will still need photographers and content creators/producers, everything is going to work out in the end…..

  5. I’m sorry to dissapoint you Ed but content is not king. That we photographers and other content producer like to repeat this to each other doesn’t make it true.

    Sales and numbers are king and content maybe queen for people looking at these numbers but I’m not even sure of that.

    That is true for most of the magazine world and actually for all of publishing – even for the art world and photobook publishers too. I have just had a whole round of dicussions with small photo book publishers. You may think that they look for good work, quality of the work etc. Well they do but what they are REALLY looking at is how much they can sell it. Thats the feeling I have taken away from each and every conversation I had.

  6. I’ve been saying this for years, and until recently virtually everyone in publishing looked at me as though I were crazy for questioning the conventional wisdom about advertising.

    Of course the fear is, you have to actually have content people are willing to pay for. Natural selection is on its way…
