I saw a screening of this film a while back. Some of it's imagery is heartbreaking and startling. It successfully transports it's message, without falling into a trap of guilt-mongering. The nomination is well-deserved. Congrats to Louie and his team.

@Ed

You would like this quote by Elie Wiesel:

"We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."

I haven't seen this film but have heard sooo much buzz. Seemed like everyone at Sundance was talking about this last year when I was in Park City.

I'm all about animal rights and I don't eat meat, etc., but for some reason spending this much energy on a documentary project about animals doesn't seem as important when there is so much injustice happening to humans around the world. More power to Louie; I'm not knocking this kind of work. I'm sure the film is great0 ... I am just saying I choose to spend my energy documenting other things ... my visual journalism is almost always about people.

Okay, so who has seen this movie? Well done, and I’m sure they spent lots of time in post. I wonder what kind of impact did their work have. Anyone know?

I am not an animal rights kind of guy, but when something that is wrong is happening, you just don’t walk by. If you do, you passively say it's ok.

I'm super glad to see both The Cove and Food Inc. on the list of nominees for best documentary. Both tackle important issues and uncover terrible deceptions; it will be a difficult choice to pick one winner. Has there ever been a tie for an Oscar...?

Congrats to Louie, my fellow Mizzou photojournalism alum, both for his Oscar nomination and for his Directors Guild win...and as an old friend, I still remember Louie appeared in a Sylvester Stallone film before going on to J-School...
