Jin Zhu, How You Living?

It’s possible to live off of commercial photography, but I don’t think it’s possible to live off art photography full time, or at the least it’s highly unlikely for all but the exceptional few. I did receive an honorarium for a show, which was a pleasant surprise, but every artist I know works a day job or takes commercial gigs.

This is kind of a “no duh” paragraph for me, but when I went to RIT it was pretty much drilled into your head that without any sort of Masters and professorship that you were not making a living doing fine art work. It was pretty funny to hear classmates complain about shooting for money when our color darkroom teacher talked about shooting a few weddings a month when he lived in Cape Cod to allow him to shoot for himself the rest of the time…
