The Photography World Is Very Narrow In What It Appreciates

he finds the photography world ‘very narrow in what it appreciates’ (a sentiment echoed by Brian) and that ‘ninety percent of the books that Steidl produce are just a little bit dull’. In a nice, if rather unexpected, synchronicity with another interview he even complains that the photo world is made up of 40-year-old men (notwithstanding his own proximity to that club).

Given that demographic, it’s rather surprising that Steidl doesn’t produce more books on beer and sports.

Someone needs to gently introduce him to things like Instagram (sounds it’ll be quite a shock for him). It’ll at least give him something different to complain about.

Steidl used to dominate “best photobooks of the year” lists but this year
based on the “Best Photobooks 2012 meta-list” (http://www.terragalleria.com/blog/2013/02/01/best-photobooks-2012-the-meta-list), it’s clear the excitement has shifted to self-publishing and specialty publishers.
