“It’s 105 degrees outside. [Baldwin] calls me over: ‘Sit down, sit down. Umm,’ he said, ‘I’m not going out on the boat. It’s too hot. It’s 20 f—ing minutes to get out, and you have to go 2 f—ing miles an hour. . . . I’m not doing it.’ It’s like, What do you mean? But you can’t argue with him — he’s not going to change his mind. So I’m thinking on my feet and I say, ‘Okay, what about we go to my friend’s pool?’ He looked me up and down — I’m pretty scruffy — and he said, ‘Your friend doesn’t have a f—ing pool.’ And I’m like, ‘Trust me, my friend has got a pool, and it’s about half a mile away from here.’ So he kind of looks at me and goes, ‘Yeah, all right.'”

  1. Hahaha. Sucks from a photographer’s standpoint, but somehow makes me like Alec Baldwin more.

  2. Fantastic. I love that he told Jake that his friend didn’t have a pool.

  3. Great story, I think it is pretty funny.

  4. That IS awesome! And great thinking on the photogs part. Shots turned out pretty interesting… more so than on a boat maybe but who knows.?. Luv the shot with the kids. Very down to earth. And ditto Rob… Alec rocks! My three yr old luvs him too : )

  5. Kudos to Jake for rolling with the punches and getting some great images from it.

  6. The ability to think on your feet … to be a problem solver … is very important. Probably the most important thing for a photographer. Having the personality, to get someone wearing a suite into the pool, is second.

  7. Hilarious. I can totally picture this conversation.

  8. Great thinking – and created a sense of warmth and intimacy for Baldwin that would never have been achieved on a boat.

  9. I loved reading all the behind the lens stories from Jake Chessum. His photos already have so much character- it was nice reading from his perspective. I have a lot of respect for him.

  10. Funny (the whole set is a good read).

  11. Sounds like Baldwin was actually pretty cool to work with and that in the end maybe Jake got a lot better outcome than he might have had they gone out on the boat. Cool story about rolling with the flow and adapting to what you’re given to work with. Well done Jake.

  12. Good on Jake for his handling of Alec Baldwin. My assistant wasn’t so successful with Alec who ended up stealing his girlfriend http://bit.ly/pF7B5S :-)

  13. Hahahaha Keith.

  14. Great story. Also somehow makes me like Baldwin a touch more. Really enjoy Chessum’s point of view.

  15. Pretty damn funny. The photos turned out great! Way to stay on your toes!
