The Sidney Hillman Awards honor journalism that explores issues related to social justice and progressive public policy. The 2009 prizes are given for work produced, published or exhibited in 2008. Winners will be announced in May 2009 and will be published in the New York Times. Winners are awarded a $5,000 prize and a plaque. Jason Polan will make art for 1 hour or 1 day (here) then mail you what he did (mostly drawings I think). Seems like a cool way to get something incredibly one-of-a-kind.

This summer and fall, Redux Pictures’ photographers have been shooting material for a new book about American youth ages 18 to 24. The book will be published in the Spring/Summer of 2009 by Contrasto Books and distributed in major bookstores around the country and in Europe.

Some of the subjects photographed include Native Americans living on reservations, boxers, organic farmers, political activists, Muslim college students, hip hop dancers, fire academy cadets, college students tailgating, debutantes, surfers and more. The work is a great mix of portraiture and documentary.

We have room in the book for one or two more stories, and are reaching out to the photo community in hopes of finding something that fits in well with the other work.

We are looking for photo essays that:

— have already been completed
— fit the theme and age range of the book
— were shot in the last year
— have not been published anywhere
— are not being distributed through any agency
— ideally, have model releases

Over 10 million images in total – will soon be available on a new hosted image service from Google, Time Inc. has announced. Ninety-seven percent of the photographs have never been seen by the public.

The LIFE Photo Archive featured on Google will be among the largest professional photography collections on the Web and one of the largest scanning projects ever undertaken.

Holy shit this Magnum in Motion up today is really good (here). I don’t think they’ve always been this good but maybe I’ve not been paying attention.

I’m sure they will try and eek some advertising revenue off them at some point but it appears the novelty of watching these things on television has finally ended.

On November 11th Catherine Talese is moderating a panel with 6 photography editors, the event is from 7-8.30PM and will be held at FIT.  Details (here).

On November 19th SPD is holding a photography benefit auction called LAND/SEA/AIR at Hosfelt Gallery in Chelsea.
This is going to be their biggest event all year, second only to the gala.
They’ve been working on this since the spring and everything is coming together beautifully, over 115 prints have been donated and they’re all professionally matted and framed.
