I love the unapologetic blast of flash and barely existent background. Purposeful “rule breaking” makes me happy.
I remember in the early 80’s you would occasionally see this style in GQ and then in Details but usually on ad pages not editorial. I always thought that it was the light “getting away” from the photographer and of course the slower film speed back in the day, also, almost 100% of the shots of this type were on the beach.
Over the years it became a “look” and it seems puzzling why, but I agree with you here that it works, and I like it.
Always enjoy images in Foam. This is one of the very few magazines I follow on Facebook.
I like the first one a lot the rest meh
